🇬🇷Mr. Tsagkarakis Gerasimos's Interview Highlights

Tsagkarakis Gerasimos is a member of the Percussion section of the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra, the Greek – Turkish Youth Orchestra, and used to be part of the TYPANA Percussion Ensemble. He has collaborated with the Qatar Philharmonic and the Macao Symphony Orchestra, Gymnastics Gala of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, the Ballets of the City of Zurich, and the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia.


Apart from art performance, he is also an author, his masterpiece is “DICTIONARY OF PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS: Playing techniques -Mallets/Sticks - Categories of Instruments - Effects, An in-depth acquaintance with the World of Percussion”, a dictionary with percussion terms printed in seven different languages.


Gerasimos Tsagkarakis collaborated with most of the major orchestras and ensembles in Greece (Greek Radio, Symphony Orchestra, National Opera and etc.) after having been granted scholarships by the Onassis Foundation, he studied solo performance and orchestral repertoire with Prof.Markus Leoson at the Musikhochschule FRANZ LISZT Weimar Germany and orchestral repertoire with Edoardo Albino Giachino at Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Rome, Italy.


Moreover, he has been awarded the First Pan-Hellenic Award at the Hellenic Student Competition for Young Musicians in 2001, the Third Prize at the International Snare Drum Competition organized by the ITALY P.A.S. (Pescara, Italy, 2014), the First Absolute Prize (98/100) regarding the Advanced Category of the Snare Drum at the competition of the International Percussion Festival (Montebello della Battaglia, Italy, July 2015) and has been selected as a substitute member of the European Union Youth Orchestra for the years 2005,2006 and 2008.



 

Interview Highlights


1. The book he wrote introduced mallets, percussion instruments, techniques, and etc. Not only percussionists, the book is suitable for composers, music teachers, and also kids. And the book was translated into seven different languages, so people around the world can read it easily.


2. "You can’t ask them to be Greece, and they can’t ask you to be Chinese." It takes time for Mr. Tsagkarakis to adapt to a new environment, China, however, he believes that most importantly is learns to respect one another.


3. There are many professional teachers around the world, instead of choosing someone who has the best reputation, you should choose someone who suits you the most.
